The British Deer Society [BDS] is a charity that operates throughout the UK dedicated to educating and inspiring everyone about deer.
Through our education and research, we raise awareness about wild deer and the issues surrounding them. We provide training to actively ensure deer can be managed humanely and safely to the very highest of standards.
We want to ensure wild deer in the UK are respected and valued while being kept healthy and at sustainable numbers, so they can benefit biodiversity and the wider environment.

International Deer News - Spike in Deer-Related Injuries at Nara Park
Authorities in Nara Park are sounding the alarm as incidents of deer attacks have surged, with 35 injuries reported in September alone — a sevenfold increase from last year. Most injuries occur when tourists attempt to feed the deer, especially male stags during the rutting season.
Visitors are urged to keep a safe distance and avoid unnecessary contact with these wild animals.

This week’s featured image is "Sika Moment" by Andy Wall, a Highly Commended entry in the "Deer in Action" category of the 2024 BDS Photographer of the Year competition.
Andy explains: "Sika, taken in Scotland, is definitely deer in action, simply for being so cute! From a photographer’s point of view, I’ve found Sika to be the hardest to find and understand in order to get an image."
Although less dramatic than some of our other entries, we couldn’t disagree with Andy.
